Drawing Workshop

I can't remember the last time I ever worked in charcoal.  Using vine charcoal I rendered a self portrait.  This FCA workshop with Hermann Brandt, out of Cochrane.  He had us trying our skills at drawing skulls; a very difficult task. The second day we were set free and worked on our own with our own photos. This is how much I got done in an afternoon, Will do corrections and add more darks and highlights, working on newsprint paper.

Demo for the sketch club

I thought I would entertain at the Calgary Sketch Club Show and Sale. I did a demo for an hour and a half. I started with a light drawing and almost finished but had to leave as I went to a football game. Here is the demo. Starting with the colour, (greens blues orange) and adding flesh colour to blend.

the colour of your canvas is black!

Seniors started with  a black canvas, painting negative space to outline the black character or slowly add the colour to the canvas reserving the black as part of the painting image.  They did a superb job at this  study. We talked about the colour black (it can be brown, grey, purple, blue) to emphasize the "light" they will paint
